Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma, and later directed a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for television journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of a particular juror. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
